The CSChE 2008 Student Organizing Committee is pleased to announce that the following three student competitions will take place at the 58th Canadian Chemical Engineering Conference in Ottawa, ON, October 1922, 2008

SNC Lavalin Plant Design Competition (deadline: May 15, 2008)

Robert G. Auld Student Paper Competition (deadline: September 22, 2008)

Reg Frisen Oral Paper Competition (deadline: September 22, 2008)

 

SNC Lavalin Plant Design Competition

SNC Lavalin Terms of Reference
  

The Canadian Society for Chemical Engineering offers the SNC-LAVALIN Undergraduate Plant Design Competition for students enrolled in undergraduate chemical engineering programs at Canadian Universities.

 

The winner of the 2008 competition will have the opportunity to represent Canada at the 8th World Congress of Chemical Engineering International SNC–LAVALIN Undergraduate Plant Design Competition taking place in Montreal, QC in August 2009.

 

Deadline
May 15, 2008

Eligibility
Individuals and groups of undergraduate students registered in chemical engineering programs in Canadian universities during the academic year.
 

To minimize the number of projects to be judged, each chemical engineering department may only submit one entry. 
Maximum size of team: 5 students

Prizes

Individual Prizes: Each team member of the first place team will receive a certificate as well as a one year electronic subscription to The Canadian Journal of Chemical Engineering. Second and third place team members will receive certificates.

Team Prize: The first place team will receive a cash award of $1,000.

Judging
All entries will be evaluated by a panel of judges drawn from industry, government and universities. The authors of the best three entries will be invited to present their projects during a PowerPoint presentation to be held at the Canadian Chemical Engineering Conference where the judges will make their final decision.

 

Prizes will be awarded at the Student Banquet at the Canadian Chemical Engineering Conference.

 

Each of the three finalist teams can claim up to $350 in travel costs/team to assist with travel to the CSChE Conference. To claim the reimbursement, the team should forward $350 in receipts to the Awards Manager following the conference.

 

Design Topic
Please provide your project in electronic format (on CD, not e-mail) to the CSChE Awards Manager. Entries for the competition should contain the following: 

 

1. Are above level of expectations in terms of quality and/or complexity

2. Contain elements of creativity or novelty and

3. Required knowledge and /or work exceeding the expected level of undergraduate chemical engineering students.

 

Statements should be precisely formulated as “bullets”; generalities should be avoided.

1. Is it an improvement/expansion of an existing plant?

2. Is it a new plant and similar or identical plant exists?

3. Is it a new plant and similar or identical plants do not exist?

 

Confidentiality
Entries should be accompanied by a letter from the head of the department of chemical engineering, indicating that the information is not confidential and that a summary may be published.

Robert G. Auld Student Paper Competition

Award: 

Prizes will be awarded at the Student Banquet at the Canadian Chemical Engineering Conference.

Eligibility:         

Any student currently enrolled in a Canadian undergraduate chemical engineering program.

NOTE: Due to time limitations, the number of participants may be limited, based on date abstract was received.  A complete list of presenters will be announced prior to the conference.

Application:      

Please submit an abstract of 100 to 200 words that pertains to some aspect of chemical engineering.  This can include design, research and engineering practice as well as work experience and educational or social issues affecting the profession.  The paper may be in either English or French. You must include the following:

         Title of abstract

         Names of author(s)

         Name of speaker

Format:

The presentations will be 10 minutes in length with a 5 minute question period immediately following.  A LCD player and laptop will be available slide and overhead projectors will be available upon request.

Papers will be rated on clarity of content, usefulness of results, quality of experimental and/or theoretical work, quality of organization of research program and evidence of originality of thought.  The student will also be judged on their presentation with respect to: clarity of expression, voice, grammar, grasp of subject, audio-visual aids, ability to hold the attention of the audience and response to questions.

The panel of judges consists of representatives chosen from industry, government and academia

Reg Friesen Student Oral Paper Award

Sponsored by the Chemical Education Division of The Chemical Institute of Canada

Awards:

First prize:         $350 and a certificate
Second prize:    $150 and a certificate

Prizes will be awarded at the Student Banquet at the Canadian Chemical Engineering Conference.

Eligibility:

This competition is open to Canadian undergraduate and graduate students currently enrolled in a chemical engineering program

The prize is intended to encourage students to present papers of general interest concerning the following: critical evaluation of their educational experiences; innovative learning/teaching strategies and materials; other topics that address chemistry or chemical engineering education.

NOTE: Due to time limitations, the number of participants may be limited, based on date abstract was received.  A complete list of presenters will be announced prior to the conference.
